One month home.
I can’t believe it. That’s what everyone says – how has it already been a month? But I’m over here wondering how has it only been a month?
I expected going from zero kids to having a toddler would turn our lives upside down a bit. And it has in the sense that our house never feels clean and I don’t remember feeling fully rested and there are roughly one million emails and text messages that I have responded to only in my head.
But, mostly, it feels like life is finally right side up. The Merritt-shaped hole that has been in our home and in our hearts for so many years is full and it feels just exactly right.
When we met Merritt last month, he was reserved and cautious and understandably confused and overwhelmed. These days he is constantly laughing and chattering away and dancing to the music that is forever playing in his head. He is warming up to snuggling and hugs and loves to give mommy kisses and play with daddy.
He loves to eat and, with the exception of most fresh fruit, he will eat just about anything, which makes this food-loving mama so proud. We can’t keep enough cheerios on hand and his favorite breakfast is yogurt with granola. He had his first fresh-from-the-oven homemade cookie yesterday and he was a big fan!
He loves any kind of rice and shredded chicken combination (like this) and his snack cup is just about his favorite thing in the world. Sometimes during dinner he gets so excited that he starts clapping and dancing in his chair! He knows the way to my heart.
He’s an itty bitty thing at 25 lb and 35” tall. He’s wearing 12M shorts and 18M in most everything else. The first few weeks we had no clothes his size and he was constantly walking around with his shorts around his feet! Lots of trips to Target and online shopping sprees later and he’s in clothes that fit.
Merritt LOVES Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. We watch an episode each morning while I’m drinking my coffee and trying to remember what it was like when I used to wake up at 9 in the morning. He gets so excited when the intro theme song comes on that he runs around the living room and dances and comes over to look at me like “mom it’s back on!” We love Daniel Tiger over here!
He is learning new things every day and passing milestones so fast I can’t keep up. As soon as I tell someone he won’t do something, he turns around and can do it. He is so much more comfortable in our home now and he is happiest when mommy and daddy are both home and we are all spending time together.
Y’all. Adoption is truly an amazing journey and I’m so grateful this is how the Lord wrote our family story. It is a true joy and privilege to be Merritt’s mom and to watch him come alive and flourish in family.
I can’t believe it’s only been one month. I can’t believe he hasn’t been here forever.
Psst The photos in this post were taken by Candice Wood, my beautiful and talented sister-in-law. Candice is a professional photographer in the Charlotte area and you really want her to take your pictures because what you can’t even tell in these photos is that Merritt was NOT HAPPY about the photoshoot situation and the wet grass on his feet. Candice’s website is here.
